How was it determined how many days each month would receive in our solar calendar?

Apologies for the confusing title. I'm curious how the number of days per month was set in our current Gregorian Calendar?

Every other month has 31 days, except for some consecutive months such as July/August and December/January while February has 28/29 days?

Spanish International Relations Post WW2 - How were they viewed by the rest of the world?

As the Spanish nation had such close relations with Nazi Germany what sort of status did Spain have in the world? Did they spend time as a pariah state?

The reason I ask is because of an excerpt from the latest Dan Carlin which talks about US military bases in Spain.

If there was a quick thaw in relations what caused this seeing as Franco remained in charge until the 70s.

Brunhilde Pomsel, personal secretary of Joseph Goebbels, publicly stated about the Holocaust: "We knew nothing. Everything was kept secret and that worked.". How likely is that to be true?

She died this weekend in munich, aged 106.

How likely is it that she lied? Can it actually be true that she worked so close with one of the most influential people in Nazi Germany without knowing about the Holocaust? Or did she just decide to look the other way, not seeing what she didn't want to see?

Source for the quote is the documentary "Ein deutsches Leben" by German film maker Christian Krönes. Original in German: "Nichts haben wir gewusst, es ist alles schön verschwiegen worden und das hat funktioniert"

I translated it for the title, but slightly inaccurate, I left the word "schön" out, which literally means beautiful but in this case it is used as some kind of filler, putting an ironic emphasis on something, meaning something like "nicely", but with a more negativ connotation. I'm not a linguist so I can't really explain it well. I doubt this is important for the question but I didn't want to leave an inaccurate translation without some kind of explanation.

What would be the purchasing power of £1 in the 1500s?

Say I was dropped back in time to the year 1550. I have £1 (or a Sovereign if that's what it would be called) to my name. What would that £1 be worth in modern US$, or what could I expect to buy with that £1?

Edit: Let me reword it a bit. I'm not looking for an exact dollar amount. More like wondering if that £1 would be like $5 today, as in a little pocket money; or would it be more like $500, and be some decent walking around money?

Up until 2008 it was believed Finland had no direct role in the Holocaust. Then a PhD student discovered the existence of Einsatzkommando Finnland.

Einsatzkommando Finnland was a German paramilitary unit that had links to Finnish secret police and followed the Finnish army during the Continuation War, allegedly carrying out mass executions of Soviet PoWs and Jews. I was wondering if any Finn or a historian who specialises in Finno-Holocaust history knows anything about Einsatzkommando Finnland. Are the crimes its been accused of accurate, and did its discovery change the way we view Finland in World War 2?

Edit: [This is the dissertation in question] (https://helda.helsinki.fi/handle/10138/19518?locale-attribute=en).

Are there any credit to the theory that China's preference of porcelain over glass led to a decline in scientific development?

I first heard of the theory from an episode of QI (Link).

Basically, the theory is that in the West, people preferred glass as a drinking utensil because they could see the colour of the wine. China, with her preference of tea over wine, never had that need. Together with China's excellent craftsmanship at making porcelain, China settled with porcelain teacups. Because China never invented glass, they never invented telescopes, microscopes, chemistry utensils, eyeglasses, etc., which greatly reduced the scientific development of China.

However I'm not able to find any sources on this theory, rudimentary Googling always lead me back to people saying they heard it from QI first. Is there any credit to this theory?

What are the most comprehensive databases of Holocaust-related documents?

I've already looked through the US Holocaust Museum, and was able to obtain relevant documentation about some of my ancestors up until 1941. Is there any chance of being able to find documentation between 1941 and 1945, or has most of that been destroyed? If it helps, they were in the Krakow Ghetto up until 1941 and were (almost certainly) transferred to concentration camps after. I would appreciate if anyone could point me in the right direction.

Clothing in Archaic, Classical and Hellenistic Greece

Heya :) I recently made a character for a p&p whose homeland is oriented towards ancient greece, and I'd like to know more about the clothing aspect.

  • What clothes were common, for what ocassion (work, travel, etc) and for whom (social class, gender)?
  • What were common colours?
  • How many (different) clothes did one posses?
  • How did that change through (those three) eras?
  • I would appreciate any useful references, though ideally they should be in English or German

In the year 767, What areas would likely have the most equitable treatment of women?

Although the year is arbitrary, I just wanted to ask something to go along with the week's theme, in a historical period that I find interesting. So, as the name implies, where would a woman likely find the most rights, or if various areas were equal, what would you get or not get? Edit: Worldwide, if that's possible compare. Otherwise, just the best you might know of in an area.
