More then just once have I heard the term Götterdämmerung in the context of WWII, but what does it refer to? Is it an operation?

I mean in terms of years (though, for that matter, I'd be interested in the months too; obviously traditional Chinese festivals are still based on the Lunar calendar, which is why the New Year moves a bit every year, but most people still use a 31 day Yi-Yue, 28 day Er-Yue, 31 day San-Yue, 30 day Si-Yue, etc).

I remember hearing that he might have even tried to produce a line abolishing slavery that had to be cut. I can't find anything confirming it however.

How did the totalitarian state manifest itself in the art and architecture of the period? I hear a lot about Nazi's collecting and hoarding art but I rarely hear about the art they actually produced

Artisans seem more skilled which would make them more important than a farmer right?

How did this change across the centuries with improvements to the weapons and how did attitudes shift as a result?

Hi there, I may have a somewhat of an odd question. Please consider these two drawings/copper engravings:
https://upload.wikimedia.org/wikipedia/commons/f/f6/Frankfurt_Am_Main-Matthaeus_Merian_der_Aeltere-Ansicht_von_Suedwesten.jpg and https://upload.wikimedia.org/wikipedia/commons/e/e7/Frankfurt_Belagerungsplan_Faber_1552.jpg
Please center your attention on the Old Bridge of Frankfurt/Main. Stream upwards there are what appears to be logs, erected at a sharp angle stream downwards, as well as other smaller logs erected vertically further up stream (only visible in the Merian copper engraving).
The shallow angle ones remind me of "Hemmbalken" used on the Atlantic Wall pre Allied invasion.
What would the purpose be? My initial though is "guard rails" so that ships which float downstream don't impact the bridges, could that be correct? Or just another measure against floating ice so the bridges don't have to rely on their massive icebreakers alone?

What did the Nazi regime tell the public about why those groups were being arrested? What did it tell the public about what would happen to them? What did the Nazis doing the arresting say compared to the government level explanation?

Ever since the birth of my son, I've gone out of my way to begin building a foundation for learning. I want him to grow up in an environment where learning and self-education is the norm. To that end I've been slowly building a library of books of all kinds for him to grow up around.
Right now, he's only 2-years-old, but as he ages, I'd like to have a steady stream of books for him to age into as well. That means I want books that will serve him at every level and every age.
Can anyone help me with this? Anything will be appreciated that can nurture his curiosity and knowledge through childhood and well into adulthood.
Thanks!

Just to clarify, I've grouped these two questions together because I have to assume that any answer to one will at least partially answer the other.

Modern art is of course popular today, but those who are interested in it constitute what seems to me a small part of the population. When asked for "good art", people are far more likely too look at older works like Turner or Michelangelo.
So my question is: would the art contemporary to people of the past be their main frame of artistic reference, or would the renaissance man yearn for Giotto or the Reichenau school? Were the people interested in the art of their time a small "clique"?

I was reading the wikipedia page on Austria-Hungary and the infobox reads:
| _ | _ |
|---|---|
| Government: | Constitutional Monarchy |
| Liberal Autocracy | |
| Personal Union (through dual Monarchy) |
So how liberal was the Austro-Hungarian empire, and how Autocratic was it? How did could these seemingly opposite values coexist within the same state?
How successful was this mode of government in keeping the Empire together?

This weekly feature is a place to discuss new developments in fields of history and archaeology. This can be newly discovered documents and archaeological sites, recent publications, documents that have just become publicly available through digitization or the opening of archives, and new theories and interpretations.

We always see in films, photographs and whatnot a lot of civilians, soldiers and army officers and even Hitler's close supporters such as Goebbels and Himmler display an aversion towards Jews. Was this driven by Hitler's own beliefs or was there already a widespread antisemitic sentiment in Germany before he made his mark?
