Why are some Roman names anglicized to drop their us at the end (Hadrianus to Hadrian) while others were not? Why do we have an Emperor Marcus and not an Emperor Tit or August?

What had stopped large American trees such as the 'General Sherman' from being cut down?

I was reading about some large trees in the United States that are generally considered some of the largest or tallest in the world. I'm curious as to why these were never cut down either to try and count the age of the tree or just general human profit seeking. Was there any protections early on in European colonisation or just lucky that these trees remain today?

(Legitimate Question) - Can anyone recommend me some readings on the history of either Haitian Vodou or New Orleans Voodoo?

I'd like to compare the two if possible, as I understand they are different, plus I'm setting a Fate campaign with the magic being Voodoo-esque.

How did Lincoln's death affect the American Civil War?

Less than a month after Lincoln's death the Civil War had ended. If someone assassinated the leader of the opposing side, I wouldn't expect the war to end so quickly after that act.

Can someone give me some insight as to what role Lincoln's death had in the conclusion of the war? Thank you.

How did the Ancient Greeks view the "barbarians"

Recently, I read a couple of excerpts on Anacharsis in which the Greeks seem to have a certain degree of respect for barbarians and their traditions. However, the mentioned texts were written by cynics who used Anarcharsis as an instrument to promote their own ideas. I want to know what the rest of the Greeks thought of the barbarians and their ways.

Were the South Slavs treated better by Nazi Germany? If so, why?

I've read that Nazi Germany had a very negative opinion on Slavic people, and even intended to exterminate them. Nazis did some very bad things further north, but it seems like they tolerated the South Slavs more. Croatia got to create the Independent State of Croatia (NDH), which was a puppet state with some autonomy. Bulgaria seemed almost neutral. It seems German atrocities were mainly directed toward those resisting them, and Jews and some other minorities, not toward South Slavs in general.

How does nobility/royalty works? What makes some ranks more prestigious than others? Are there only royal positions or is there (was there) also a noble hierarchy under the royal one? How do the crown passes from one house to the other?

Hello! Summing up my questions and many more, I am really curious as to how monarchy works, especially in Europe. (Feel free to add about any other culture, but I am mainly interested in European history). What makes a duke more important than a count and how does one become/became one? I have a lot of questions about this, so it would be great if you could point me to a resource to learn more about this, please! Also, what is the name of the subject related to the study of nobility and royalty? I know that saying "European nobility" is really vague; it is that I just don't know much about the royalty of any specific country/period. Thank you so much!

How did people join the clergy in the middle ages?

I was just wondering how people could join the first estate. It didn't have the option of simply recruiting members from birth like the second estate, after all. Could anyone join the clergy? What kind of requirements were in place? Could a peasant become a member of the elite by joining the clergy?

Why did the Mexican American War produce so many American Presidents and politicians?

A cursory look at the list of American Commanders on the wiki page shows that the 12th president Zachary Taylor and the 14th president Franklin Pierce were commanders during the war. Furthermore, the 18th president Ulysses S. Grant served in it plus several failed candidates for president. That's excluding the fact that many of the commanders eventually served as territorial governors or representatives/senators in various states. Why did this war produce so many statesmen in mid-19th century America?

Can't remember a Story about a Roman General.

I read a while back about a Roman? General who attacked a village/settlement that was separated and protected by a river or body of water of some sort and he built a bridge to cross over and attack and once he was victorious on his way back he burned down the bridge as a matter of pride to demonstrate Rome's reach and ability. He might have been Scipio and some attack on Carthage? but I'm not too sure.

I really want to read more about this I just can't remember any specifics to start a wiki surf session. Any help would be greatly appreciated.
