The Doolittle Raids are trumpeted as striking fear into the hearts of Imperial Japan. However, the bombing was a one-time thing (until much later in the war), and did very little damage. Did the Japanese (the citizens, military, and government) actually care about the bombings? If so, how much did the bombings affect them?

For example, if I fell through time to 345 BCE one of the first things I would ask is, "What year am I in?" What would the people of 345 BCE tell me? I'm assuming they wouldn't say "345 BCE." From my understanding the use of BCE is semi-new. I hope my questions makes sense and if it's extremely dumb don't be afraid to give me a hard time about it! :)

In my British Art History class we were discussing Thomas Lawrence's Pinkie and the professor mentioned that there has been speculation that Sarah was of mixed heritage but very fair skinned, which led to her nickname of Pinkie. Is there any concrete evidence to suggest this?

I recently realized that there are many, many more books, films, and TV shows about the Westward Expansion of the 1800s, which was a relatively short time frame compared to the Colonial Era. About half as long, actually.

What makes this even more surprising is that the Colonial Era was extremely eventful and exciting. There was the discovery of an entirely "New World," first contact with cultures to whom Europeans were completely alien, at least two major wars (French-Indian and Revolutionary), the founding of a nation with a new(ish) style of government, that would come to have a massive impact (good and bad) on the entire planet, and so on.

Despite all this, there are only a handful of books and movies about this period of human history, and only one TV show that I could find: 1964's Daniel Boone. Westerns, on the other hand, have long been a staple of not only American popular culture, but have been entertainment fodder for most of the rest of the world, too.

I just find it odd, and more than a little frustrating. While I know there are plenty of scholarly resources to be had, I would love it if there were more films and books for just simple entertainment. So far, the only real standouts that I'm aware of are The Last of the Mohicans and HBO's John Adams.

So, as an historian, why do you think we don't care much about the Colonial Era, as far as entertainment is concerned?

Working from Alaska, I'm familiar with the way copper from the Copper River, obsidian and dentalium were traded up and down the coast of Alaska, but what was the extent of the trade routes south of Alaska? Did trade networks extend all along the coast, or were they geographically isolated? What did they trade?

Even after a small amount of research we are able to see that the US and the allies committed war crimes. While the Allied war crimes are not even close to to the axis war crimes, why are most allied war crimes ignored by history?

WWII is considered the last war between good and evil by many. However war has never changed. People die and nations and their leaders are responsible. So why is WWII the last "good" war?

I recently read an article that claimed you can look at the life of Jesus in two ways; one being, that he was telling the truth and truly is whom he claims to be, or conversely that he was making it all up.

I personally like to think that Jesus existed and was a great man and genuinely wanted peace and love for all but he was not truly the son of God. The article I read made it seem that you cannot take the middle ground, like I have, he was either one or the other.

Is it this black and white? What do we know for fact, if anything? Did Jesus really believe he was God?
