Did they just put all these things on hold for years at a time?

And just how important was the person of the emperor to government function?

It seems to me that in European conflicts of the time (like the Crimean War) cavalry was still a fairly prominent unit for major assaults, while in the US Civil War -to my knowledge- it seems like the bulk of the battle was decided by infantry and cavalry remained more of a scouting force than anything else. Was this the case?

Two related questions: When did infantry in European armies stop drilling for anti-cavalry formations like the infantry square? And when did Americans?

Catching fish is something that's been going on for thousands of years, but I never really knew how far inland one would expect to find Lobster and other fishes caught from the sea.

If this were the 1700's or 1800's, could I expect to find Lobster a day's travel from the port/site of catch, where the fish were dropped off?

Maybe not what you're thinking - it has nothing to do with the rumor that she had relations with a horse, but I was told that CtG rode an Appaloosa. She is depicted in a painting in a men's coat riding astride on a horse that could be either a fleabitten grey, or a leopard Appaloosa.

I have been trying to do research on the history of Appaloosa horses outside of the Nez Perce and asking a few ladies who are interested in side saddle riding led me to researching Catherine, but I would like to find someone else who might be able to give me some more insight as to whether or not she rode spotted horses, or had an affinity to a certain breed or color of horse at all.

I am trying to make a mod for a game and for this I would like to have the real name of the mother of Muhammed II Khwarezmshah. A glance at the wiki page and several historybooks gives me Terken Khatun. The thing that puzzles me however is that this means 'Queen of Turks'. Now I find it incredibly hard to believe that this is the real name of this woman. Apparenlty she isnt even the only 'Terken Khatun' ,there have been several.

So could somebody help me out of this pickle and explain to me what is going on here? :D

I just read a short history of Liberia and it mentions Charles Taylor, with a throwaway line about him being 'possibly backed' by the USA. I am far from knowledgeable about the subject and would like to know whether or not the removal of Samuel Doe WAS approved of by elements of the Reagan/Bush administration during the first Civil War and, if so, why?

The example that leaps out is the attempted poisoning of imprisoned SS officers by Nakam in 1946, although I'm more interested in actual wartime examples. I'm more interested in examples of widespread utility (rather than, say, the posoining of one particular general or politician).
