I was recently in Prauge and the heydrich terror seemed to be a fairly important part of the Ww2 history there. I tired the Museum but i was unfortunately closed but am still quite interested in hearing about Heydrich and his assassination by the Czech resistance. Does anyone have a good place to start?

According to my textbook, warship tonnage went from 650 000 in 1880 to 679 in 1890. This seems odd due to a general trend of increasing navies in the rest of Europe at the time. Furthermore, the British navy increased to 1 065 000 tonnes in 1900 t *Edit: The book is "20th Century World History Course Companion" for the IB diploma programme. *Edit: It seems that my source has a typo/is wrong.

I was having a look at the wikipedia list of largest statues (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/List_of_statues_by_height), and was stuck by the fact that there are a lot of statues above 50 metres and all of them are in Asia.
In fact, most of them are in east Asia (mainly China), with just a few in Russia. Why is Asia so peculiarly obsessed with very tall statues?

Is there any way of knowing what their music sounded like? I ask because, even though they knew of harmony, and we know what instruments they used, it struck me that no records exist, so is it possible to know what scales they used, what tempoes, and so on.
Please forgive any ambiguities of phrasing, I'm familiar with nether Ancient Greek history, or music theory.
Also, I know "Ancient Greece" spans a rather long time, so information about any period is fine with me.

Did the public want the US to remain a set of colonies? Was there any notable pro-US protests, etc?
I've always wondered this question but never got around to asking it to people educated on the matter, but I feel like the answer is interesting.

I am currently an American working in South Africa. I have been told that South Africa did not get TV until 1974. I am thinking TV was available in 1950 in the US. Just wondering why so long in South Africa and how long it took in other countries.

Im in the middle of reading Napoleon: A life by Andrew Roberts and he just talked about how Napoleon abolished the inquisition after his annexation of Spain. I thought it was werid for the inquisition still to be a thing during the age of enligthenment since it is so linked to medival times. Anyways, how was it viewed before it was abolished and how did it function?

It's obvious that things went into chaos after his death, but how did Alexander the Great ensure that his subordinate leaders from Macedon did not rebel against him?
He seems to have put a lot of trust, for example, in Antipater, who he left in charge of Macedon and Greece in his absence. Antipater might have been tempted to assume control for himself while Alexander was thousands of miles away, but he never did. Same with his other generals until he died. Did he have a strategy?

Hello! Again, I really hope I'm writing this according to all the rules.
Okay, so. As stated by Liu Shaoqi, the Great Famine (caused largely by the Great Leap Forward) was "30% natural, 70% policy", implying it was largely man-made. In my research, however, I'd actually wager it was almost 100% man-made, due to the policies' lack of reliable economic foundations (Lysenkoism) and the tensions within the party, that hindered officials from reporting actual numbers.
I'd love to hear some arguments as to how it could have been at least affected by natural disasters. Thank you in advance!

My grandfather who passed away before I was born lived near Munich during world war 2. He later immigrated to the states.
Before he passed he gave my mother some pictures of his father (my great grandfather) and himself( my grandfather). Some of these pictures have writing on the back but unfortunately I'm not fluent in German. I have been desperately trying to learn more about my family but my mom doesn't know much and this is all I have.
Thanks for any help identifying his rank( he was in the Wehrmacht and maybe translating anything. It means a lot to me and my family.

Considering two popular species for falconry (red-tailed hawk and Harris' hawk) are native to the Americas I'm curious why falconry was never practiced.
Were there taboos against capturing birds of prey? Was there just not a need for using a bird to catch prey? Something else?

I am writing an essay on this an am a bit stumped.
Apart from the ideas I have that Hitler and Napoleon attacked Russia during Winter and were vastly underprepared for the weather, I am a bit stumped on the question.
I am finding it hard to find information on the Mongols, let alone on their invasion of Russia.
Could anyone give me a few other reasons that I could look into?
Thanks

Just saw this post on /r/wtf, but I am struggling to find any context behind this particular photo.
Is there any evidence that human meat was sold/consumed during Russian famines?

We all know the story of Schindler's list. But I've heard of others who also helped large numbers of people by smuggling them out, giving visas, etc . .

I'm just curious about the overall battle. Was it even in a narrow gap between rocks? Did they really fight like that where they made one row and just pushed and stabbed? Were there really that many persians?

Are they available in any academic databases or anything? I remember hearing that one of the reasons that the Japanese scientists at Unit 731 were let off easy because they willingly handed over their research at the end of the war, so I'm guessing that they didn't just throw that stuff away. Does anybody here know where I can find the data/papers/reports?

Did Austria-Hungary care about the assassination of Franz Ferdinand in 1914? After watching the movie of 37 days, it seemed like Austria didnt really want to go war, Germany was just manipulating them and pressuring them to go to war. But in my World history textbook, it blames the Austrians for the start of WWI and Germany worried about its ally joined in only to fight against France (which is partially true). But im just confused, did the people care at all? did the government care at all?

Hey guys. Detroit native here. My grandfather was a (white) police officer during the notorious riots here and has told me of his time spent hiding under a vehicle from sniper fire. So, I've heard plenty about the black on white riots here and elsewhere (Watts riot, etc) but cursory research tells me there were plenty of white v. black riots here and elsewhere but I can't seem to turn up much information on them - what were they? why did they happen? what happened?
Thanks in advance.

Obviously slavery was deeply engrained within the Deep South and even Upper South as basis for the economy, but were there signals of reform in any of the border states which were less reliant on it for their economy, like Delaware? I read that in Delaware that about 90% of the blacks were free and of course geographically it's more connected to the North than the South so it would make sense. I'm curious as to what the prevailing attitudes were like at the time.
