It seems as though he wasn't a particularly smart or kind man, and that most of his activities took place in Hispanola and the surrounding territories. So why is Christopher Columbus-ism so prominent in US schools and culture today (memorials, a federal holiday, an integral part of US history courses)?

Why did the Norse, Roman, Greek, Pagan, Babylonian and Egyptian faiths cease to exist and why did the Abrahamic religions take over so quickly? Is it just to do with politics or was there a genuine change in people's views? And why of all the polytheistic faiths did Hinduism survive over the others?

I've seen plenty of photos of the Allied forces during the Crimean, but none of the Russian side. Do any exist?

As a Canadian I finally got around to watching the excellent Civil War documentary by Ken Burns. Something which was talked about and it felt like too is that the Southern Generals were so much better than the North.
Is this this true and what are the reasons behind this.

Most subreddits generally deteriorate over time, yet this subreddit has maintained itself as a hub of professionalism and quality content. I would like thank each and every member, be them professors or just individuals who are passionate about history, for making this a place for positive thought and discussion.

I'm very interested in Irish Nationalism, and the modern development thereof. What are the big and more subtle factors of the Easter Rising of 1916 that led to its demise? Why did Southern Ireland gain independence five years later? If any social historians would like to weigh in on this, I would be forever grateful!

And on what basis did people ban the drug for? How effective was the ban? What was the public's attitude towards the policy and how did it change their opinion on the drug?

During WWI, the Germans weren't shy of using it on the battlefield and during WWII, it would have probably helped the Germans in the Russian campaign seeing as their equipment was lacking and could have been a turning point in the battle of Stalingrad. It can't have been for ethical reasons or the Geneva convention since the Nazis didn't care much for those.

I'm curious to see if it was a widely used as it is portrayed in films and games. And what was the impact? Is there evidence of significantly less desertion following the order or did it only further damage the morale of the Red Army soldiers?
