Has there ever been a king that had to be found among the "peasantry"?

I am thinking of this trope of the true heir to the throne being someone who was born/raised in ignorance of his noble status. Maybe because he was illegitimate and raised by the mother or because he had to be given away to protect him from an all too ambitious family.

When did women begin painting their nails?

My friends and I are having this discussion and we have (we think) learned that in the US women began using nail polish in the 30's after the creation of auto paints.

But that can't be the start...so when did it begin?

How were ancient spear/javelin/arrow shafts constructed?

When searching for information about ancient pole weapons, arrows and javelins, the information seems to focus on the heads of these weapons (the metalworking process, the design of the blade, etc.).

I can't seem to find much information about how the shafts were constructed (or obtained). For example, the Macedonian Sarissa or Kontos, which were very long (and apparently sometimes consisted of connecting sub-shafts).

In accounts of the massacre at Carrhae, we are told that the Parthian horse-archers continuously restocked their supply of arrows at their baggage train, enough to fire continuously for (presumably) hours. How were the shafts for such an enormous quantity of arrows obtained in such terrain?

We know that the Romans designed their pila to foul after use, to prevent ad-hoc re-use on the battlefield by the enemy. Was it likely that arrows/spear shafts (as well as the harder-to-manufacture heads) were retrieved after battle, to reduce the time it took to rearm similarly equipped troops in the field?

Why were The Queen's Rangers so called, given that they were formed during the time of a King's rule?

When watching Turn, I noticed that Robert Rogers' outfit was called The Queen's Rangers despite this being in the time of King George III. I assumed they had a history dating back to Queen Ann, but Wikipedia indicated they were formed as Rogers' Rangers during the French and Indian War.

What gives?

How prevalent were 'No Dogs, No Blacks, No Irish' signs and sentiment in WW2 era Britain?

When considering the history of racism in Britain the constant refrain raised is that there were commonly signs up in pubs stating 'No Dogs, No Blacks, No Irish'. There is significant personal anecdotal evidence that at least one of these signs existed, but I have been stumped in any efforts to determine the actual number.

I have read numerous examples of racism in Britain (My dissertation was on the internment of aliens during WW2) and this is not intended as a whitewashing of racism, but having some form of scope or comparison would be helpful.

This is my first post, I believe I have followed the rules and I don't think this topic has come up before. If it has, or I have not, then I am truly sorry.

Few questions about De Medicina

De Medicina is one of the oldest surviving texts about medicine. The whole book can be found here

I'm writing a short essay on it and I've found that my latin sucks and I can't completely understand the English either. This might have been a bad idea, but I'm sticking with it.

Problem 1. " to attend at times a banquet, at times to hold aloof." Am I correct to assume that this refers to fasting every now and then? (from book one, chapter one, second paragraph).

Problem 2. The diet. I'm going to assume that Mediterranean diet has remained relatively similar to these days. Is it so or has there been major changes? I have not found sources that would let me to believe otherwise.

Problem 3. Regarding sex there's this "The use is worse in the day-time, and safer by nigh". (Book one, chapter one, paragraph 3). Sex apparently is safer in the night time than it is during day time. I'm assuming that this has something to do with privacy and nothing more, but is it so?

Thank you, I'm not sure if this is the right subreddit. If not please point me to a better place! Thank you in advance for any help you can give.

Why did Queen Victoria declare naval officers were not gentlemen?

I recently read that the traditional way for an official to greet a crowd is to say "Ladies, gentlemen, and officers of the Royal Navy" because Victoria had made a specific decree that naval officers were not gentlemen. Casual googling has not gotten me more information, so I was wondering what the story of this is.

How did German military doctrine differ from Allied and Soviet doctrine during WW2, and what happened to German doctrine afterwards

Many militaries today use doctrines that have evolved from either allied/NATO doctrine or from Soviet/Russian doctine, depending on whose sphere of influence they were in. I guess I have two questions regarding German doctrine here:

  • Did German doctrine differ much from the others, and in what ways?
  • If it did differ, were there any strong points from German doctrine that were picked up by others after WW2 was over, or was this knowledge lost?

Hermitage Museum and queen last words written/carved near a window. Anyone knows anything about it?

Few years ago I was visiting St. Petersburg and while there I spent a while in Hermitage museum. While there I overheard a conversation between some tourists and a guide saying that there are words carved/written by a queen saying: "I see them coming over the frozen lake/river". Now I have no idea if that was in this museum (it should make sense as it was winter palace) or somewhere else or if I misheard everything, but I would like to know more about it and if possible even see picture of those words. Thank you for your time!

For example, ancient Greek philosophers, did they delve much into recreational drug use? In anyway can we contribute that to their profound accomplishments?
