I originally learned this was an effort to put their Baltic fleet in ice free ports in case of another flair up with England and France. Lately I've read it may have been a greater show of force to discourage England and France from providing greater support to the Confederacy, and to show support to the United States.

I know that the Americans and British sent some air force aid to the USSR during the Nazi invasion, but did the Soviets ever send military aid to help the Western Allies after D-Day?

Specifically the ones that had been held by allied powers (not nationalist China). It looks like most were held in camps in Australia, New Zealand, and America. How were they treated when they were returned to Japan?

I was curious about the cost of horse shoes, but a full cost breakdown would also be very nice. How much would I be spending on stable fees, feed, horse shoes and other related expenses?
How do all these add up against the cost of a horse?

Were there genuine ideological differences between the two, or was mere rhetoric?

Did other countries support either side, either militarily, with supplies, or ideologically? Did the Americans solicit outside involvement?

My guess was that it started the chain of events that pushed Rome towards civil war? Would that be correct?

I know everyone has different taste on music, it just seems like there was a huge movement against it. Especially after reading yesterdays Now I Know.

I love history, and plan on having it as my major. I've read in the FAQ that only the top schools will be able to support my early career after getting a PHD.
I'm currently deciding between two schools (LMU and U of Richmond), and was wondering: What do graduate schools look for in history applicants? (I would also like to get a scholarship, if possible.) Does the reputation and academics of my college matter when I'm applying for graduate studies in history?

A lot of the statues and pictures of statues Ive seen depict quite well defined / muscular men or well endowed quite feminine women.
Would these body types be accurate of their inspirations, or would it be more akin to the air brushing / photoshopping of our models in magazines today?

I assume there were always collectors or whatever who were interested in antiquities, but how did archaeology become an academic discipline that we could use to learn about the past? Raiders of the Lost Ark is on TV and it got me thinking about archaeology.

I remember hearing of a tale, a myth perhaps, of these men that would focus on building their bodies and minds to peak performance. Does anyone here know the name of which they called themselves?

Today:
Saturday Reading and Research will focus on exactly that: the history you have been reading this week and the research you've been working on. It's also the prime thread for requesting books on a particular subject. As with all our weekly features, this thread will be lightly moderated.
So, encountered a recent biography of Stalin that revealed all about his addiction to ragtime piano? Delved into a horrendous piece of presentist and sexist psycho-evolutionary mumbo-jumbo and want to tell us about how bad it was? Need help finding the right book to give the historian in your family? Then this is the thread for you!

What's the story?
edit: I've updated agnatus on Wiktionary to include the simple, non-legal definition now. The top link now (still) links to the version of the page from when I first asked the question.
Thanks for the responses.

The question applies to all stages of the war, from the civil war phase from November 1947 to the founding of Israel in May 1948, and Israel's war against the invading armies from then until July 1949.
