How did fast food culture spread throughout the US and Canada?

The spread of chain fast food places over the past few decades seems to be unprecedented. Now, any town will have a McDonlads, Wendys, burger king, tim hortons, 711, etc.

How did this spread happen, and what are some resources that cover it?

Thanks!

I found this cool painting of Native Americans riding horses in single file. Does anybody here know which event, if any, it is depicting? Link in comment. Thanks!

Not the best photo of a painting... The bright spot is from the camera.

Is this like a last stand, or marching off to exile in a reservation, or what?

Was polio as prevalent in Europe in the first half of the the 20th century as it was in the United States?

I am an American and I remember being in school and hearing stories of polio cases where children lost the use of their limbs and even diaphragm because of polio and I always wondered if Europe had the same issue before the vaccine was invented. I tried Google and could not find a decent answer.

Why did Japan attack Pearl Harbor rather than trying to finish off China or even attack India and Burma?

I understand they were trying to emulate Taranto with Pearl Harbor, so this is not an argument about that- but Germany went to great lengths to not get into a two front war. Japan had far less men (less than Germany, despite having a similar population) and much less industrial capacity. Why would they go for a two front war against two world powers at once and not simply increase efforts against China or even if they were to go for a first strike why not against the UK?

Was the US that close to joining the war before Pearl Harbor that they decided it was necessary to attack first? Would the US have joined the war if Japan did start an invasion into India/Burma or put even more pressure into China? Or perhaps they could have tried invading the Soviet Far East?

I do understand the IJA was having a lot of difficulties in China but as I understand it, the UK genuinely feared the Indian mainland being invaded (especially after Japan destroyed much of the English Navy in Indian Ocean and South East Asia). Now, I assume, it was just that hard for Japan to get their fleets around Singapore without the UK noticing? But if that's the case why not attack Singapore and Australia then? Malaya was not very well protected and neither was Australia.

And I guess the important question is, how would Japan fared in these cases? My knowledge of the Sino-Japanese war in its later stages (particularly from 1940-1945 is almost nil I hear almost nothing about it) but from what I understand neither Japan nor China could necessarily win due to lack of resources. But given Japan's success during the opening months against American and British forces I wonder how it would of fared if the Americans were missing. I guess the same could have been said about the Soviets if they decided to head north but I honestly don't know how well garrisoned and manned the Far East was. But I assume if Japan tried cutting the USSR from American supplies from the trans Siberian railroad and the British supplies through Iran would have helped Germany out immensely.

To what degree did China support Kim Il-sung's North Korea?

I'd like to know more about the role China played in the shaping of North Korea during Kim Il-sung's rise and rule. From what I know, China was reluctant to get involve in Il-sung's plans for Korean unification. But I have also read that China and the Soviet Union gifted his regime a great deal of economic support, even early on.

What stakes did China have in Il-sung succeeding or failing? Did they minimize their impact or did they try to gain influence over the new DPRK?

I'm entirely unfamiliar with the foreign policy habits of the early People's Republic of China, and I'm interested to know what the leadership's mindset was about this aspect.

The bombing of Nazi occupied France, in Au Revoir les Enfants

The movie Au Revoir les Enfants is a french new wave film that takes place in Seine-Et-Marne in January 1944. In the movie their are multiple bombings on the city. My question is who would bomb occupied France, or is the movie factually incorrect? I just find it hard to believe the English or the Americans bombed French citizens.

How can one locate the records of a deceased Red Army soldier in WWII?

Not sure if this is the right place to ask but here goes. My grandmother grew up in Ukraine and her father served in the Red Army. To this day, she has no idea what happened to him. I'm interested to know if it is possible to somehow find any archival evidence of his service. All I know is that he was drafted in 1941. The last time she saw him was later during the evacuation of Kiev. After that she never heard from him again. I guess Soviet records of casualties were not up to par back then but is there any way to find out what happened to him?

The Year 1000: Critics (Modern and Medieval)?

I am trying to put together a unit on Millennialism for an upcoming seminar. While I am having no trouble at all finding sources that credit the idea that Medieval Folks were all going bonkers round about 1000 (thanks Ademar and Ralph Glaber) I am having a much harder time finding accessible source (both primary and secondary) which critique or question the Millennial Theory.

Anyone have any suggestions either for primary readings or places to start?

WWII Liberation of Paris, France, and Battle for Berlin.

Hi, I have a question pertaining about a short story that I'm writing. Would it be OK if for example, I have the liberation of Paris, France, and the battle for Berlin in one whole sequence that happens over a couple of days. But in reality those two events happened a year apart. Would that be historically OK or not?

In the 1800's it seems that many cities commissioned "birds eye view" illustrations of their city. Given that airplanes had not yet been invented how did predominantly flat areas such as Cheyenne Wy (picture in comment) verify that these photos were accurate?

I'm interested in learning about various conceptions of monarchy.

Monarchy seems almost universal before the modern age. I've heard a bit about the European concept of Divine Right. I've also heard of the Chinese concept of the Mandate of Heaven.

In my undergrad poli sci classes, we were exposed to Hobbes' idea of a monarch, which didn't seem so rosy but better than alternatives.

And I guess in some high school history class, we probably spent 1 lecture on enlightened despotism.

I've been reading Pierre Bryant's from Cyrus to Alexander, and he spends a decent chunk of the book describing the nature of the Persian monarch. It seems like the Persian monarch of antiquity is almost a superhero: the most handsom, strongest, tallest, and militarily capable person in the Empire who works to defeat evil and uphold goodness and truth.

I'm not sure if this question counts as a "poll" question, violating the rules of the subreddit, but I'd be very intersted in hearing about the different concepts of monarchy and the trappings of monarchy in different areas of the globe across time. I could always break it out to many questions.

African-Americans in Louisiana Post Civil War

How were they treated in general? From what I can dig up, they were obviously not treated as "equals with whites" but not as bad as some places. Lots of violence. White supremacy groups killing and terrorizing a fair bit.

More of a general question, what did they view as a solution or a way to move forward? Did they want revenge on whites or simply want to go about their way?

I really do appreciate the help guys, thanks so much!

EDIT: Also, were the slaves in that area really freed when Lincoln made the emancipation proclamation or did they have to wait till the Union forces took control?

P.S. ^^Sources^if^you^can^thanks

Why do people think the moon landing is fake?

I've been reading about the jfk assassination and how certain things caused people to lose faith in the government and might have caused a rise in conspiracy in regards to the assassination. Like the umbrella man, oswald dying so soon, the video which caused more confusion than it would have if there wasnt one, etc.

So the question is, what about the moon landing or events around the moon landing that might have contributed directly or indirectly with the belief that it was fake?

Help with Hitler photos, possibly never been seen.

When my grandfather passed away a few years ago, we found a taped cardboard box hidden in the back of his closet. After taking the duct tape off, inside was a complete picture album with color pictures and B&W of Hitler. The story we were told is he was in a communications division in the air force. He found a picture album in a drawer while in Germany, and inside had over 100 photos of Hitler, the Eagles's Nest, and some where he looks normal with expensive suits, not military suits. Even posing with children in one. Some of the pictures have handwriting below the pics, but we can't read it due to being German. I can recognize dates though as some were 1935 and so on. Cool, but I don't know who to ask for translations, are they valuable, etc? Any help is appreciated.

Must-read Jstor articles in Intellectual History

Dear historians. I am about to finish my MA in American Studies and am therefore about to lose my access to Jstor. Before this happens I'd like to download a few more for my reading list and library.

So, I'd like to have your suggestions regarding classic articles I should definitely get. My main interests are US Intellectual history and history of economic thought. But any suggestions are welcome! Especially intellectual history or history of ideas of other regions than the US.

Many thanks for your time!
