Was there an argument about what to call Japanese internment camps back when they were first implemented?

Right now there is a big debate about what the prisons on the border should be called. Did US politicians back during the Japanese internet complain about that they were called back then?

Belgium legalised same-sex sex in 1795. Why? Was 18th cen. Belgium friendly towards homosexuals?

  • France also repealed sodomy laws (hence legalising same-sex sex?) in 1791. Was this due to a lack of religious influence?
  • Was it safe to be known as a homosexual publicly?
  • Was the idea of homosexual partnership and love ever considered valid (as opposed to heterosexual marriage)?

Hitler and Pearl Harbor

Did Hitler know of and approve the Japanese attack on Pearl Harbor, or was he unaware that it was going to happen? Hitler was many things, but he was not stupid. Surely he did not want the United States to get involved in the war (at least until he had dealt with the major European powers). Any clarification would be appreciated

What are some good sources for music history?

Lately I've been more interested in music history, specifically things that you don't learn about in high school, such as pre-17th century music, or almost anything outside of Europe before the modern era. Does anyone know of any good books/websites where I can read up on this more?

Tips for researching personal project

Hi all,

I bought a book at a antique sale and I've been obsessed with researching the artist who made it for months now. However, I'm hitting a dead end. This is my blog - https://eccentricscrapbooker.art.blog/

Recently I've ran out of options for researching the artist herself so I've been researching the images from the book - lots of medical supplies branding and trademarks from around the 1900s.

If anyone can think of any new routes to take for research I'd love some ideas!

Info on the specific "missions" that Hitler sent people on to retrieve occult relics?

Anyone have reliable sources of info on the actual logistics of those trips? How many were there? Was there a specific strategy or type of relic they favored? Did they have a defined budget or scope? Were there archaeologists or military folks leading these trips, etc. It seems like even if you were a true believer, it would have required some kind of defined planning and not just "here's a wad of cash and a passport, come back with something cool..."

BONUS QUESTION - do we have any evidence of other modern-era countries doing anything similar? We often hear how "Hitler was nuts for the occult" but were there other leaders like Stalin or Mao who might have ordered similar missions?

The 1921 death of actress Virginia Rappe after a wild Hollywood party is considered one of the first major scandals in Hollywood. What actually happened to Rappe, and how did the subsequent trials impact the American public's opinion of the film industry and faith in the criminal justice system?

So far all the sources I've been able to find online have been very obviously biased in favor of exonerating Fatty Arbuckle, and it's difficult to get a balanced picture of what might have actually happened. There's also not much mention of the broader impact of the case in public opinion and the perception of Hollywood as immoral. Did this help lead to the Hays Code, for instance? Did it lead to widespread distrust of the criminal justice system?

In Early Modern English literature, Lapland is sometimes mentioned as a land of magicians and strange creatures. How did this perception start, and what did it entail?

Here are some examples. Marlowe writes:

Faustus, these books, thy wit, and our experience

Shall make all nations to canonize us.

As Indian Moors obey their Spanish lords,

So shall the subjects of every element

Be always serviceable to us three.

Like lions shall they guard us when we please,

Like Almain rutters with their horsemen’s staves,

Or Lapland giants, trotting by our sides;

Sometimes like women, or unwedded maids,

Shadowing more beauty in their airy brows

Than in the white breasts of the Queen of Love.

And here is Milton, much later:

Nor uglier follow the night-hag, when, called

In secret, riding through the air she comes,

Lured with the smell of infant blood, to dance

With Lapland witches, while the labouring moon

Eclipses at their charms.
