What kinds of intellectual values does Ibn Rushd, or Averroes, emphasize in his Religion & Philosophy treatise? As you know, throughout history religion has often been seen as antithetical to science and rational thought. How would Ibn Rushd have defended intellectualism based on Islam? Given what you know about the influence of Greek philosophy on Islamic thought and the multiethnic character of early Islamic societies, why do you think it was important for Ibn Rushd to expound on Muslim intellectualism as he does?

Did plantation forests exist or was the industry dependent on natural forests? Did any formal industry even exist or did people simply fell trees as needed? What trees were favored?

I've been thinking a lot about Nietzsche recently, particularly what he was to say about music. It seems like some of his most penetrating and beautiful prose is devoted to describing the effect music had on him. Clearly, Wagner had an influence but Germanic composers in generally seemed to inspire his thinking.

So my questions: Do we know what performances Nietzsche attended? Do we know what role "classical" music played in his daily life? And do historians have an opinion about how they may have affected his thought?

This may be American-centric since they might be as known in European countries, but it just feels like we hold the gods of ancient Rome and Greece of more value than the rest of Europe.

The Roman Empire probably had a role in that but with how powerful the British, French, Dutch, and Spanish would become, it doesn't feel like they embraced their ancient beliefs as much as Italians did like during the Renaissance period.

I know many Christian traditions like Easter and Christmas was adopted by pagan traditions but again, it feels like Americans don't hold the same value of importance of the European Celts than the Romans and Greeks. Their gods just feel like they have become household names to people unfamiliar with their culture would still know from pop culture entertainment that I don't see from other European cultures.

I've read that people who heard the speech thought very low of it and quotes from the press referred to it as "The president's silly words." Of course, now the speech is considered one of the greatest in history. We're people just so upset by the slaughter of the battle that any words said about it would be met by this harsh panning?

Most books and articles on the Aztecs published in recent times mention Ometeotl as the supreme being of the Aztecs. Even in a college class on the Aztecs I took, Ometeotl was mentioned as the supreme being, without any other comment. Ometeotl was first talked about by the scholar Miguel Leon-Portilla, who put forward the idea of Ometeotl. However, I haven't found any mention of Ometeotl in primary source documents. Ometeotl is only mentioned in modern work on the Aztecs it seems. And the primary sources mentioned by Miguel Leon-Portilla all have different interpretations as convincingly argued by Richard Haly. And as far as I've read, there hasn't been any rebuttal by Miguel Leon-Portilla to the interpretation put forth by Haly. Why then is Ometeotl still mentioned as the supreme being in every source published today, if no one has made a convincing rebuttall to the argument of Haly, the argument that Ometeotl never exsisted? Am I missing something obvious?

The history of Cambodia (especially the khmer rouge's rise and fall) have been a subject of great interest to me, but unfortunately there don't seem to be any relevant mentions on the booklist. While biographies rather than scholarly history books, I've already read First they killed my father and Survival in the Killing Fields, but for the most part I've found myself dead ending. A few titles have popped up, but I'm honestly not sure where to start.

As a sort of sidenote, I'm very interested in any books on Cambodian folklore - First they killed my father mentioned a bodiless witch monster which piqued my interest.

Any recommendations at all for places to start would be appreciated.
