I have been reading a lot lately on the Second World War and about soldiers that were held captive for years. So, we're they still being paid whilst held or was there pay cut off completely?

What was the quality of life like for someone in Nazi Germany on average, providing they weren't of a persecuted group and didn't actively dissent?

They say dictators make the trains run on time. But did that translate into a decent standard of living?

When looking through the roster of U.S. Presidents I noticed that Abraham Lincoln was the first President elected with facial hair in 1861. Excluding Andrew Johnson and William McKinley every President (10 of them) up until William Howard Taft in 1909 had some form of facial hair. What caused beards and mustaches to fall from favor?

So my wife's far extended family just showed up from Sweden and one of them had a curious tattoo that turned out to be the "family mark". Such a thing I kind of knew existed but it never connected that it was a reality (if that makes sense). In the past 5 days my googlefu has completely failed me on any information about these things. What are they called? My family is from Denmark, did they do these things? Is there any kind of record of them anywhere?

In the late 20th and 21st century, Gaddafi and Saddam Hussein had their faces on their national currencies while they were still alive and in power. Kim Il Sung may be the most extreme example as the North Korean Constitution still considers him the "Great Leader" 10 years after his death. Mao Zedong still enjoys a revered status in mainland China although it has been toned down considerably following reforms. In Europe there was Stalin and Hitler, but no leader after that regained similar status in their countries.

Why were so many men able to make the citizens think they were like gods when it never happened in most Western countries? Is it because we are more educated and less prone to brainwashing?

How would society have viewed a mixed ancestry like that? Are there notable examples of such individuals?

I don't mean to make this sound like a loaded question -- I don't intend to imply that I think Justices need term limits. I'm more curious about how this came to be, especially with regard to the "checks and balances" philosophy. What's the justification? Also, is this something the Founding Fathers intended, or is it a more recent development?

How come the French army was so technologically inferior to Germany's that they were completely defeated in just a week? Even China did better against the Japanese's technologically superior army and was still abe to fight back.

I've heard far more stories of male homosexuals being killed for being gay in the past, for instance. It also seems like people were much more paranoid about men being gay than women in the past.

Men's business attire has remained largely unchanged for well over one hundred years now. Lapels and neckties may get wider or narrower, but the basic outline of the business suit persists, while clothing for women and children have undergone more drastic change. Why?

In watching Marco Polo there are a few things that have come up which I questioned the accuracy of and was hoping you could resolve :

1. Kahn comments that his father drank until his liver burst. Were they aware of anatomy as such and the impact that things like drinking had on it? I'd expect knowledge of the critical organs like heart or lungs but were they aware of things like liver or kidneys etc?

2. One character mentions being of the "third sex". I've heard of this in places like Thailand or the Philippines but was that a thing in places like ancient Mongolia? Also how would this " third sex" be defined by them?

3. Kahn always seems to be drinking a white liquid that appears to be milk. Would that be drank so often as opposed to tea? If so how would they prevent it from spoiling?

If anyone else is watching I'd be open to hearing things you may have noticed as well.

It seems weird to me that so much of this country that was such an essential part of Germany is today part of Poland.

So the title states my basic question, I am a community college student about to transfer to university and I hope to major in history as I want to eventually teach it.

On to the actual question, what are some of the best resources for leaning about medieval Japan? Whether it be books or online? None of my mentors specialize in this so they are not really sure.

I know it failed, but was it a sound plan that just didnt work, or was it out of desperation? On the Allied side, were there any mistakes that made it initially a success, and how were they able to correct them?

The factoid appears at the end of The Imitation Game and I have seen it before but this sort of thing seems incredibly subjective so I'm wondering if this number represents a claim that is generally supported or if it was used because it was an outlier with a stronger claim.
