Did any other Europeans ever fly Dutch flags to get into Tokugawa Japan?

During Japan’s famous period of isolation they were known for only being willing to trade with the Dutch in a period where global trade was becoming increasingly important. My question is did other Europeans ever attempt to fly Dutch flags and dress as Dutch people in order to try and trade with Japan? Or would that have been too complicated to be worth it? I’d be really interested if there was some source out there that indicated this

What were the interactions between Ancient Greek colonies and the surrounding indgenous peoples like?

While I've seen a fair amount of scholarly publications concerning the relationship between Ancient Greek colonies and their mother cities, do we know what the realtionship between the colonies and the local indigenous population were like? For example do we know anything about how colonies like Massalia or Emporion interacted with the local Celtic peoples?

How did the lack of night/day time in ancient Northern Norway influence their culture?

I recently learned that during the summer and winter months, there are cities in the North of Norway where the sun never sets and never rises for long periods of time. I was wondering how this might have influenced their religion/mythos in the past and what explanations they gave as to why the sun did not set in that area during that time. Additionally, others have also recommended that I ask more specifically about the Sami culture of that area.

Is the US railroad gauge width related to the size of Roman chariots?

There are a number of viral social media posts (like this one that ask why the US standard railroad gauge width is such an unusual size, and trace it back thousands of years to conclude it is related to the size of Roman chariots and the ruts they made, which influenced generations of successive roads, tracks and railroads through to today.

That explanation, however, seems far too simple to me as I know that a number of countries have different standard railroad gauge widths, though these usually are within a couple of inches, so maybe they do all trace back to the same source?

One of the major consequences of the Sino-Soviet Split that began in the 1960s was that Vietnam aligned with the USSR rather than its neigbour, the PRC, leading to significant Sino-Vietnamese rivalry. But did any of the Soviet satellite states in Europe attempt to align with China during the split?

After slavery was abolished in America how difficult was it for black Americans to get a legitimate job?

Been playing red dead redemption 2 lately which takes place in 1899 and every now and then i go into a business that is either run by a black person or has a black person employed there.

So i wondered how difficult was it for a black American to gain employment or own a business after the end of slavery? I feel like it would have been nearly impossible given racial tensions still being evident.

The US and UK were at war in 1812. Hundred years later they were allies in WW1. Today they are considered closely aligned. What were the major events/cultural shifts that improved this relationship from enemies to friends?

(Going by the one-line removed answers I've had, I guess I'm more interested in the 1812 to WWI part of that timespan. And it raises the question of how friendly were USA and UK at the start of WWI. Were they genuine allies or just adversaries with mutual enemies at that point?)

Can you help me witha part of Japan's history?p

So I'm writing a fictional novel set in Japan.

Right to the business I need to know when would this events happen in actual timeline and how would be other country's technology and weaponry in those times.

1 is before 2, 2 is before 3 all the way to the end.

  1. Starts when guns haven't gotten popular in Japan. Portuguese invade Japan but are stopped and backed by Samurai's newfound power.( fictional stuff ) (don't need technology and weaponry just the time)

  2. Japan gaurds itself heavily with the users of this power. Thus it is isolated from the outside world for roughly 1.5 centeries.

  3. Within this time of isolation Japan turned against itself and went to a civil war, small governments wanted all of that "power" for themselves. ( What are new "notable" technologies that were founded by Japanese men and women within this time and not bringed by outsiders?)

  4. At the end of this war, the loss was so much to prevent more loss most of the governments signed a peace treaty to never teach that power to public and for all of them to fall under a global government. Only the soilders of that government (which still isolated Japan from outsiders) were teached by the ways of that "power".(At this point outsiders given up the hope to even go to Japan as freindly ones, they just kinda said "forget about that country")(What would be the period this part of timeline is happening at in the Japan's own history?)

Was Marcus Julius Cottius related to the gens Julia family? He enjoyed friendly relationships with Augustus, and supposedly Julius Caesar just kind of let him exist.

He was a tribal chief of the Lingures and lived at the same time as Julius and Augustus. He's most well-known for building an arch to signify friendship with the Romans.

Did he just claim to be gens Julia for that Aeneas Clout, since the other Julius' decided to claim to be descended from Troy? Or is there a historical backing of him being part of the family?

Thanks

Books on the transmission of Greek ideas into Rome and the medieval period?

I'm looking for works that try to trace which ideas of the Greeks, particularly their philosophical ideas, actually passed into Rome and were well-known enough to continue into the medieval period prior to the rediscovery of Aristotle. Anyone have any recommendations? Obviously this is a pretty large question, so any more specific works or just an answer with a general overview would be appreciated too!

Was the final battle in "All Quiet on the Western Front" historically accurate?

*Spoilers ahead for the 2022 film "All Quiet on the Western Front*

In the new German film on Netflix, "All Quiet on the Western Front," an armistice is agreed upon by the French and German that all fighting will cease at 11 AM on November 11th, 1918.

However, in the film, the German commander sends his troops on a last minute attack to reclaim a piece of territory, minutes before the cease fire goes into effect.

I'm wondering if there was a final attack like this, or if it was a creative choice by the filmmakers.

Thank you!

According to some historians, the writing system of 'reverse boustrophedon' only appears in two places in the world: Easter Island (aka Rapa Nui) in their rongorongo tablets, and the Inca empire. Could this be evidence of pre-Colombian contact between Polynesian and Inca people?

I'm doing some internet research on the possibility of contact between the polynesian people of Rapa Nui and the indigenous people from the South american continent, specifically the Incas during the rule of Pachacutec and then his son Tupac Yupanqui.

I'm aware of this post which discusses the travel of the sweet potato from the Andes to Polynesian and other pacific islands, and the linguistic exchange that might have taken place during that. I've also come across other facts that could pose as further evidence for this contact between peoples, but I can't be certain as I'm not a professional or expert by any means. Which is why I wanted to ask here!

Evidence I've found is mainly:

  1. In 1957, the anthropologist J. V. Knorozov claimed that the only two places where ‘reverse boustrophedon’ occur in the world are in Easter Island rongorongo tablets and 'ancient Peruvian tablets'. (source, keyword search Peru to skip to relevant part in the paper) But I'm having trouble finding anything else about the alleged Peruvian tablets written in reverse boustrophedon- does anyone else have a clue?

  2. Tupac Inca Yupanqui is said to have lead a 10-month-long voyage of exploration into the Pacific around 1480, reportedly visiting islands he called Nina Chumpi ("fire belt") and Hawa Chumpi ("outer belt). The voyage is mentioned in the History of the Incas by Pedro Sarmiento de Gamboa in 1572 but it is debated whether this took place at all. My only source for this is wikipedia which is disappointing, and I'm wondering if there are any scholarly sources on either side of this debate.

  3. Going off of number 2, there's also the oral history of the Hanau E'epe cited by that one suspiciously race-obsessed anthropologist named Thor (who basically did it all to try and prove his theory that white-skinned, orange-haired, Viking-descended Chachapoya people built the Easter Island heads, but I don't care too much for his argument). I'm more concerned about the timing of the Hanau E'epe arrival which seems to fit strangely well into the Inca timeline of the emperor's life. Could these Hanau E'epe have been Tupac Inca Yupanqui's people?

  4. On the Peruvian coast west of Tiwanaku there is a seaport called Matarani. The name itself apparently is neither a Quechua nor Aymara name (according to certain travel blogs, so I can't be certain). It is an interesting coincidence that in the language of Rapa Nui- “Mata” means eyes, and “Rani” means heaven, and another name for the island of Rapa Nui/Easter Island is mata ki te rangi, meaning "Eyes looking to the sky" (source) Does anyone here know about Quechua/Aymara or could confirm where the name of Matarani, Peru comes from?

  5. The scientific study where they were radiocarbon dating chicken bones found in Chilean Mapuche territory and found out that the bones were of Polynesian descent and not European (source)

TLDR: I've amassed a lot of research into possible pre-colombian connections between Rapa Nui and South American indigenous people, and I wanted to see if anyone else has explored this topic and could provide insight. Thank you!!

What is the history of two spirit?

I was looking into two spirit and Native American gender identities and was surprised to learn the term two spirit did not originate until the 1990s

Even more specific cultural terms like Muxe didn’t associate men dressing in women’s clothing until the 1950s.

I was wondering what is the actual history of gender identity in many Native American cultures and the history of two spirit?

Where can I find more on Native American and Meso-American warfare from before the time of European contact?

As everyone else has, I grew up learning about European colonization an the genocide that occurred of the natives by the Europeans but as I’ve started taking a deeper dive into pre-colonial history of tribes and nations like the Aztecs, Lakota, and Comanche, I found that all of these civilizations to some extent also engaged in conquest and warred with neighboring tribes.

What are some good authoritative sources like books, essays, and documentaries that go into depth on this aspect of pre-European American history?

Why didn't Britain invoke article 5 of the NATO treaty during the Falklands war?

Why didn't (couldn't?) Britain invoke article 5 of the NATO treaty to push the US for help?
