I picked the Space Race as my topic but my professor said it was too broad. I will be going to her for some options but I was just wondering what you guys might say.

My grandpa left me a very old acoustic guitar from WWII and the interesting thing about it is that on the back it has the names and or nicknames of all the guys in his company, 108 names in all. It's a very cool item and I want to know more about it. On the back it says "New Zealand" then "Guadalcanal" then it reads "DIV. TRANS. CO. 3RD. MAR. DIV. F.M.F." What does that all mean? I know Guadalcanal is a battle but that's about it. I can provide pictures if needed. I would also love to know I there is any information on his division. There is some maybe significant names on the guitar including "Capt. Good Joe Harrod" "Capt. Horseshoe Bloch" "Lt. Jolly Henry" "Capt. Horrible Horgan" and "Mar. Gunner Groucho Peterson" Any information would be awesome! Thanks!

The size of the confederacy was pretty enormous, and I can't imagine there being much in the way of shared identity outside of economic interest. What would a Cajun soldier have in common with a tennessee mountain man, or a texas cattle rancher and a Georgia factory worker? Given the differences and the high degree of sovereignty each individual state possessed, was there any armed conflict between states during the Confederacy's existence?

When I read about the beginnings of various sports we now see as highly lucrative entertainment industries, I also see that many owners and organizations were against professionalism. Why is it so? Was it merely stingy owners? Cultural views?

Why did the allies turn to an American general to command the European theater? Wouldn't a British general have had more experience fighting the Germans? Was it part of a compromise for more American involvement?

There is lots of literature on the economics of building castles and cathedrals but I want to know how the common buildings were funded. I know that some towns were laid out to start but I can't tell if this means a local lord built all of the buildings (houses, blacksmith shops), or left spaces for individuals to come and build with their own resources.

How much was the local lord in control of the growth of the towns/cities? I know there was a lot of diversity, but I can't find any direct information on this thanks!

The Mig-25 had an extremely powerful vacuum-tube-based radar system which could punch through ECM with brute force. Supposedly, it could cook rabbits or other small animals from several hundred meters away if it were used on the ground. Are there any verifiable reports of this? Seems like a dangerous thing for the human mechanics to be working around.

How did the Native Americans travel on foot? How heavy was their typical traveling load? What kind of "gear" did they take with them when they traveled? Also what would their pack consist of when on the warpath?

I've heard many accounts of how heavy a Roman soldier's pack was carrying his armor, cooking supplies etc etc. I was wondering what the Native Americans load was like in comparison.

Also does anyone know how much distance a group of Native Americans could cover in one day?

After a recent backpacking trip I was wondering if there were any insights I could pick up to travel lighter and farther from Native Americans.

Additionally, does anyone have any good books to recommend on ancient trade and commerce, and in particular Roman activities outside the empire?
