Did Leonardo da Vinci ever meet Michelangelo?

I know they didn't like each other and were alive at the same time and lived fairly close. I just don't know if they ever actually met face to face.

If India has as large of a population as China, why is it not as much of a world contender?

I understand India has a stellar (heh) space program as well as a decently sized military, but why haven't they emerged as one of the worlds top powers like China has? I don't even hear about India in the news.

How did ancient philosophers make their living?

Today we have this view of ancient classical philosophers like Plato and Socrates and Aristotle being wise old men who walk and talk, write, and teach. But did their tuturings and books make them enough to live off? Would they have other day-jobs to earn them money? Did they get funding from particular states? How did Philosophy become a popular enough profession that it was economically viable?

What authority does the U.S. president (i.e., Abraham Lincoln) have to stop a civil war?

Forgive me if this is a silly question, but I'm currently reading Simon Winchester's The Professor and the Madman. The book isn't at all about the US Civil War, however it's mentioned that W.C. Minor joined the army and got me thinking on a tangent.

Considering Lincoln's peaceful nature (or at least that's how he is portrayed in popular history), I have a hard time believing he was accepting of a civil war. He'd have known how violent that could have been for the nation and, I would think, take measures to avoid such a war unless it were the last possible solution. Did he see the war as a necessary evil or did he support either side's cause? And does a U.S. president have any power to say "Hey guys, let's not do this"?

Why is the Battle of Waterloo considered more decisive than the Battle of Leipzig

Waterloo is generally considered to be one of the most decisive battles, by both modern and contemporary historians. However, Leipzig was fought when Napoleon was at the height of his power with 160,000 French soldiers at his command, including many of his veterans. He was also facing the last alliance that had a chance of beating him. At Waterloo, he had only 73,000 troops, include numerous raw recruits. Wellington's force was just one of many that Napoleon had to defeat. I've always seen Leipzig (and Moscow) as far more important to Napoleon's eventual defeat. Why do so many sources cite Waterloo as being more decisive?

Is there a way to research online a (now deceased) relative's service history in WW2?

I have a full name and date of birth. He was drafted and served in the US Army in Europe sometime from after D-Day but before the Battle of the Bulge (in which he supposedly participated) until the end of the war. He went into the Reserves and was later called up and served in Korea as, I believe, a Master Sergeant. I think he operated a BAR in WW2. That's about all I know of his WW2 service, and do not know what unit he served with.

If I went back to England in the 1500s, how different would the food quality be?

I'm not looking for answers like "well you wouldn't have cheeseburgers anymore". I'm wondering how different the food quality would be. What are the chances my stomach couldn't handle a meal? Would fruits like apples taste completely different because of some breeding we've done in recent history? Were there any cool dishes or foods that have been lost since the 1500s?

What was the socio-economic impact of the change from horse-drawn carriages to automobiles in the West?

So I was wondering that in the early decades of the 20th century when automobiles were becoming extremely popular and things like the Ford Model T were creating waves, they were displacing a pretty old and established industry, right?

Horses and carriages had been around for centuries and had a lot of professions attached to them - like coach makers, repairers, horse equipment manufacturers, stablehands and grooms, horse doctors etc. And all of this was becoming obsolete within a few decades.

So what was the reaction to this change? Was there anger, or bitterness? Was there unemployment? Or because of the gradual nature of the change, was it smooth?

Who suggested that the rise of Continental Empires, at the expense of Seaborne ones was inevitable

I read somewhere a few years ago, about a briefing (perhaps at the Royal Society, but maybe somehwere else) in the late 19th/early 20th century in which it was suggested that Continental Empires would take Seaborne ones due to modern developments such as trains, telegraphs. But I can't remember who it was! It was offered as a sort of counter to Mahan... at least from what I remember.

Thanks to these innovations the full expanse of land could be harnessed (for the first time, as before it could take days to send a message, and even longer trying to move things like ores, coal ect.), giving continental Empires a huge advantage as they could get resources where they needed to be quicker, more securely (no sea crossings, blockades ect.) and possibly cheaper (no middlemen, no need to invest so heavily in protecting merchant fleet ect)

Does anyone know where to find the document "A French Sugar Planter Describes the French and Saint Domingue Revolutions" online?

Found a link to it on "studymode" but it's labeled incorrectly. Doesn't lead to the actual document, but rather an independent essay that's a comparison of the Haitian and French Revolutions. I think the author references the piece I'm looking for once and that's why it the studymode link appears in search engines. Nothing else seems to even reference the document. I used to have a textual copy in an old textbook but cannot seem to find it anywhere. Figured I'd ask here. Thank you in advance for any/all assistance!

Why was the Peace of Westphalia agreed to? What lead to such a dramatic shift in diplomatic norms?

Speaking as someone with a very cursory knowledge of European history, the Peace of Westphalia always struck me as a very progressive for the time. After such a long history of wars of religion and conquest, what made European political thought change in such a big way? What were the steps that led to this point? My knee-jerk explanation would be to say that the 30 Years War was so devastating the elite began to reconsider their motivations for armed conflict, but I have to imagine that's an incredibly reductive take.

Why is the history (particularly medieval) poorly depicted in the media so frequently?

When i say poorly depicted, I mean poor in terms of historical accuracy. More specifically, I'm thinking about films such as Ironclad, Kingdom of Heaven, Vikings, that sort of thing. Vikings and Kingdom of Heaven are great, but they're not entirely accurate.
