Hey all, I'm really getting into Roman History lately! So additionally I was wondering if anyone could recommend really basic, detailed accounts of the Roman Empire.

If my question is a bit broad, I apologize, I guess how would the average citizen find out about: changes in rulers, military victories/defeats, new laws or taxes, etc.

I have a very specific question. I'm doing my final paper for school about the economy in West and East Germany during the period of the Berlin Wall and I need some good graphs/sources. Although I have a lot, I still haven't found one about the unemployment rate in the GDR during that period... A graph would be really helpful.

Obviously I'm not a Holocaust denier or anything like that, but I feel like it's natural and common for all parties involved in wars (specially ones with ideological ramifications like WWII) to exaggerate and fabricate facts, news, photographs and others to support propaganda against the other side.

I confess that I'm quite ignorant on the subject, so I apologize if the question is out of place or kinda absurd. But I'm very curious about what's the academic consensus on it. Alternatively, is it possible that the events are still too new and alive in the collective memory of the peoples involved to reach any kind of objective and unbiased conclusion?

So my cousin dug up an old photo of my grandfather from WWII taken sometime after september of 1942. He was a frogman who landed on Okinawa but I don't know much else about what he may have done or what UDT he may have been a part of. I've scoured the internet trying to find info on frogmen and there is sadly very little. If there is anyone out there who is familiar with their training and service history that would be great. Specifically I'm looking for what teams he may have been a part of in Okinawa and generally where he would have trained, whether it be in the Chesapeake Bay or in Hawaii and what that entailed. I really doubt he was one of the original frogmen since he only participated in Okinawa and none f the earlier landings.

Was there a period where one was available and other was not invented yet?

I've read in a Jared Diamond book that the arrival of humans in Australia coincides with the extinction of massive animals. Is there any truth to his claim that humans did cause that extinction? Are there any cases of human-caused natural extinction predating the Industrial Revolution, other than this?

Im guessing he spoke Hach-Deutsch but was that always the case?

I've taken a few courses on ancient history, particularly of ancient Greece, and am growing increasingly confused with scholarship dealing with that subject matter. It seems as if every 'scholarly' book I read on the ancient world deals more with historiography than anything else, and I come away from readings more familiar with scholars' names than those that made the history. Basic textbooks in the 100 to 200 levels cite scholars' arguments very rarely, and mostly deal with source material. Anything beyond that, however, seems to really focus more on the historiography, and the history of scholars drawing different conclusions from the same evidence. I realize that historiography is important, but in the field of Classical Studies, it seems to be a much more prominent facet of historical scholarship.

Is this because of how little sources there are? Massive archaeological discoveries seem to be rare, but they seem to indicate a lack of evidence and a 'thirst' for it by scholars.

I am by no means a scholar or authority in history, or really anything--I'm just an undergraduate student trying to understand the nuances of a field. Is my generalization that scholars of ancient history are struggling to make use of inherently limited source material correct, or would those who are more-read in this regard disagree with me?

It's just hard to believe that the dispute is only about a 14 hundred year-old argument about who should be in charge. There must be historical events that gave rise to the fierce and lasting division. Yes?
